Did you forget *again*

Has another month gone by and you realise you never got around to doing that all important self exam?
Did you know nearly 70% of all breast cancers are found through self-exams and with early detection the 5-year survival rate is 98%.
well here is an innovative way to remember every month, go to “Check ‘em”
each month they will post a new, humorous image or video to their page as a reminder to “check ‘em, so you can keep ‘em” claymation breasts

Have you checked ‘em?

October is breast cancer awareness month,
breast cancer awareness month
Check 'em, Keep 'em
& pink ribbons seem to be everywhere. You name it someone somewhere is slapping a pink ribbon on their product & many are making a donation for every pink ribbon item to a breast cancer charity. Everything from socks & tee shirts to travel mugs & sun sleeves. A trip to your local mall looks like an explosion in a Barbie factory, all helping to bring awareness to this killer disease. But when was the last time you had a breast exam either a self exam or medical? If it’s more than a month (self) or more than a year (medical) it’s high time you lifted your shirt!
In the U.S. 12.68% of all women will be diagnosed with breast cancer, with 33% eventually losing their battle with the disease.
Thanks to the technology available to us, there are more and more effective treatments to fight breast cancer.  However, you can’t treat the disease if you’re not aware that it’s there.  Being proactive, keeping up with monthly self exams and paying attention for unusual lumps or discharge can lead to breast cancer being caught early, giving you a greater chance of survival.  While it isn’t guaranteed, the odds are in your favor that you will get to live a long and healthy life.  The rise in breast cancer has been dramatic. In 1960, 1 in 20 women were diagnosed with breast cancer, that number has skyrocketed, up to every 1 in 8 women today.
The American Cancer Society’s most recent estimates for breast cancer in the United States are for 2011:
  • About 230,480 new cases of invasive breast cancer in women
  • About 39,520 deaths from breast cancer (women)
Whilst the majority of the cases were in people over the age of 45, tragically the number of women under 40 diagnosed with breast cancer continues to rise. A crucial first step towards detection is to make monthly self exams a priority, along with a yearly doctor’s visit and after 40 get an annual mammogram.  If you notice anything out of the ordinary, don’t hesitate to get it checked out.  The sooner you do, the sooner treatment (if needed) can begin. For those whose breast cancer is detected in the early stages the survival rate is increasing every year and is currently around 96%, Right now there are more than 2½ million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

Every day should be a “Don’t Fry Day”

The Friday before Memorial Day is Don’t Fry Daydont_fry_day

The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention has designated the Friday before Memorial Day as Don’t Fry Day. The Council’s goal is to encourage sun safety awareness by reminding everyone to protect their skin while enjoying the outdoors onDon’t Fry Day and every day.
Remember to Slip! Slop! Slap!…and Wrap when you’re outdoors — slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen of SPF 15 or higher, slap on a hat, and wrap on sunglasses.
Don't fry day
Don't fry day
Because no single step can fully protect you and your family from overexposure to UV radiation, follow as many of the following tips as possible:
  • Wear sun-protective clothing, a wide-brimmed hat 3inches at least, and sunglasses.
  • Apply sunscreen generously (remember to apply 20 minutes being going out in the sun).
  • Avoid sun burns, tanning, and using tanning beds.
  • Seek shade between 10am and 4pm.
  • Use extra caution near water, snow, and sand. Remember reflective surfaces increase  the intensity of the rays.
  • Get vitamin D safely through food and vitamin D supplements.
As warm weather approaches and millions of Americans prepare to

enjoy the great outdoors, the risk for ultraviolet (UV) damage of the skin increases. Skin cancer is on the rise in the United States, and the American Cancer Society estimates that one American dies every hour from skin cancer.
Fortunately, skin cancer is highly curable if found early and can be prevented. Remember to Slip! Slop! Slap!…and Wrap when you’re outdoors — slip on a shirt, slop on sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, slap on a hat, and wrap on sunglasses. The best way to detect skin cancer early is to examine your skin regularly and recognize changes in moles and skin growths.
Most skin cancers are caused by overexposure to UV radiation. Using a sunless self-tanning product and continuing to apply sunscreen can help greatly reduce skin cancer risk.
People with lighter-toned skin are more at risk of UV damage, although people of all races can and do develop skin cancer. If you have a family history of skin cancer, lots of moles or freckles, or a history of severe childhood sunburns you are at a higher risk of skin cancer.
It’s never too early to start educating your children to be sun smart.
Minimizing the dangerous effects of unprotected sun exposure, should be a life-long practice for everyone.

The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention promotes the reducuction of skin cancer incidence, morbidity, and mortality, through awareness, prevention, early detection, research, and advocacy.

Do you want safer personal care products?

 sun sleeve

Right now, cosmetics manufacturers may use almost any ingredient or raw material in soap, shampoo or makeupwithout government review or approval.
According to EWG’s research, 22 percent of all personal care products, including those made for children’s use, may contain the cancer-causing contaminant 1,4-Dioxane, and more than half of all sunscreens contain oxybenzone, a potential hormone disruptor. The U.S. government isn’t doing its job in protecting us from these hazards.

Are we exposing our kids to something much scarier than #BPA?

Hitting the Bottle By DOMINIQUE BROWNING
SUDDENLY, there’s a baby boom going on around me. I’m making weekly shopping trips to stock friends’ nurseries, and I’m struck by how many signs on the shelves advertise BPA-free bottles, BPA-free sippy cups. It breaks my heart. Manufacturers might be removing BPA, a chemical used to harden certain plastics, from their products, but they are substituting chemicals that may be just as dangerous, if not more so.
“BPA-free” seems like a step in the right direction. BPA, or Bisphenol A, is a synthetic estrogen that disrupts normal endocrine function. There is growing evidence in animal studies that exposure during fetal growth affects the development of reproductive systems and, in offspring, can lead to neurological problems. BPA has also been linked to prostate and breast cancer. continued at NY Times

May is Skin Cancer Awareness Month- Stages of Skin Cancer

Welcome to the 30 days of senseable sun protection. Every day in May we shall be posting information to help you make more informed choices about enjoying hte great outdoors-safely
It seems to me that most people don’t really know very much about skin cancer. There are those who definitely fear it and may even overreact in protecting themselves.
But there are a large number of people who see some changes in their skin and just figure it will go away, in time. So they ignore it and in time it may just go away.

And even then they may need some pushing from their spouse or a true friend to go have it checked out by a dermatologist and/or a qualified doctor of alternative medicine. You may even want to work with both. But the next time a change occurs on their skin, it may not go away. Still yet they may just live with it until it starts to become a matter of big concern.
Some skin cancers are slow growing and some can start to grow and spread quickly, even internally without you ever noticing a thing. All you ever notice is that small bump, crusty or discolored spot or lesions on the surface of your skin, not knowing what skin cancer stage it could be.
So in an effort to make you react right away when you see ANY little changes occur on your skin, I want to make it clear what the stages of skin cancer are.
Non-Melanoma Stages
• Stage 0: This is when cells are starting to form abnormally. They are precancerous, but have the potential to become cancerous. This is the very best time to react, when you see something Abnormal.
• Stage I: The abnormal cells have now become cancerous and the diameter of the lesion is less than 2 cm. (about the diameter of a pencil eraser). At this point it has not spread beyond the surface of the skin.
• Stage II: Now the cancerous area is greater than 2 cm. (about the size of a marble +). It still has not spread beyond the surface of the skin.
• Stage III: It has spread to other adjoining areas and you may not even be able to notice it. The regional lymph nodes now could be involved.
• Stage IV: The cancer has spread to other distant areas of the body and it could be involving internal organs.
Melanoma Stages
• Stage 0: Abnormal discolored cell will start to show up. It could be as simple as a dark colored mole.
• Stage I: Cancerous cells are now present. At this point they are less than 2 mm. thick. This is about the thickness of a quarter.
• Stage II: The cancerous spot is now between 2 and 4 millimeters in thickness (between 1 and 2 quarters placed together). They are still only confined to the skin.
• Stage III: The melanoma skin cancer has spread beyond the skin and now involves the lymph nodes.
• Stage IV: It has now gone even beyond the lymph nodes and reached such vital organs as the liver, lungs and brain.
So as you can see skin cancer is something everyone needs to be aware of and it’s something you should take seriously. The skin cancer warning signs are there to tell yousomething.
Don’t be afraid!…Just be aware!…and then react!
I am a 20 year survivor of stage III squamous cell carcinoma skin cancer. So, much of what I say comes from my own experiences. If you want to learn more about skin cancer visit here

SWAG is as much a part of the Oscars as the folliclely-challenged gold guy and stands for ‘Something We All Get’. In previous years the value of swag bags had skyrocketed to exorbitant levels which finally raised an eyebrow with the IRS, then, was swiftly followed by a tax form!
Baskets maybe slightly more modest but still with total values reaching several thousand dollars. The  recipients found perfume, jewelry & clothing including a pair of Sunny SleeveZ & an item from newly launched Sunny BeadZ UV jewelry collection!

Sunny Sleevez are light as a feather, 50+UPF sun sleeves that provide instant, chemical-free sun protection, blocking 98% of UV rays. No mess, no missed spots, no fuss. Slip them on in the sun, Slide them off when you’re done!
Many people don’t realise that sunscreen takes at least 20 minutes to even START working, must be reapplied EVERY 2 hours, may contain toxins & of the top 500 tested last year only 8% even deliver the protection they claimed!

Skin cancer is now the most common form of cancer in the USA, with 1 in 5 Americans diagnosed in the course of their lives. Often some of the worst damage occurs on cloudy summer days when the UV rays are just as strong but the temperature is cool. To combat the uncertainty this poses for many people, the makers of Sunny SleeveZ created Sunny BeadZ a line of jewelry that features UV color changing beads.
The UV beads on the Necklaces, bracelets and key rings are white indoors and instantly change to color in UV light, the stronger the rays the brighter the color. Added bonus, all beads (color changing & permanent color) as well as charms are Made in the USA.Enter our giveaway for a chance to win  1 of 3 sets of Sunny BeadZ necklace and bracelet.

Sneaking veggies into desert…kid certified, it’s delish!

I came up with this delicious, nutritious & best of all easy snack when my formally ”voracious-veggie-eating” toddler decided that all fruit and veg, in any form were “‘scustulous” and “hateable” and not to be tolerated!
Perfect Pumpkin Pudding
  • 1 cup (organic) unsweetened apple sauce
  • 1 cup (organic) unsweetened pumpkin
  • Hand full raisins
  • Agarve syrup to taste
  • Sprinkle cinnamon
The first time I made this recipe I went heavy on the applesauce, as it was one of the few ”acceptable” foods, & slowly increased the pumpkin each time I made it.
The first time I also used a huge amount of syrup, & even put a little on the spoon so the first taste was irresistibly sweet,
Once it had been certified as “yummy” & no longer regarded with suspicion but instead had moved to the delicious treat list, I slowly reduced the amount of syrup with each making until now I don’t bother at all
We also use natural yogurt in place of apple sauce for a change
 Nutrition Information
Canned pumpkin (not pumpkin pie filling but pure canned pumpkin) is extremely nutritious and is a fabulous option for adding to recipes when you do not have fresh pumpkin.
Basic Nutrient Facts
Pumpkin is from the squash family, often people only think about pumpkins in fall. If so, you are missing out on a nutrition powerhouse. A 1/2 cup of pure canned pumpkin provides roughly 41 calories, less than 1 g of fat and 0 g cholesterol. Canned pumpkin provides 10 g of carbohydrate (4 g sugar) and is rich in dietary fiber, offering about 3.5 g per 1/2 cup serving. Unlike many canned foods, it is virtually sodium-free.
Canned pumpkin is an excellent food source of both Vitamins A and K.
  • A 1/2 cup of canned pumpkin provides roughly 19,000 International Units (IU) of Vitamin A
  • 20 mcg of Vitamin K or nearly 25 percent of the DV.
  • Vitamin A is an antioxidant nutrient that is essential for healthy eyesight while Vitamin K is important for proper blood clotting.
Canned pumpkin is rich in two essential trace minerals. A 1/2 cup serving provides about
  • 10 percent of the DV (considered a good food source) of both iron and manganese.
  • Iron is a key component of hemoglobin, a part of red blood cells that carries oxygen to all of the body’s cells. The cells need oxygen to break down glucose and produce energy. Manganese functions as a cofactor (or helper) for many enzymes that are involved in the metabolism of carbohydrates, fats and proteins. It also is a part of enzymes that help form bones.
Meets Veggie Requirement
My Pyramid Food Guide recommends that Americans consume a wide variety of vegetables.
Vegetables are divided into five subgroups, including starchy, orange, dry beans and peas, dark green and other.
Canned pumpkin helps fulfill the recommendation to consume approximately 2 cups of orange vegetables weekly.
Cinnamon is a blood sugar stabilizer. Active ingredients present in cinnamon help regulate blood sugar levels. Other notable cinnamon benefits include improving memory, reducing arthritis pain (when taken with honey) and treating medication-resistant yeast infections. Having antimicrobial properties, consuming foods cooked with cinnamon is effective to fight bacterial infections and yeast infections
Agave syrup is commonly used as a sweetener to replace the common sugar and other chemical sweeteners. A 1 tbsp. serving of organic raw blue agave sweetener roughly contains 60 calories and 16 g of carbohydrates and is labeled with a glycemic index of 39 or less. Agave syrup contains the same number of calories per serving as table sugar, but, it is several times sweeter thus less is needed.
