The Good, the Bad and the Dangerous! The Best and Worst of 2013 Sunscreens

WooHoo the 2013 EWG sunscreen report is here!
The good news is the sunscreen industry has finally started to respond to consumerpressure to make sunscreens that actually do help protect to protect skin from sun damage with fewer harmful chemicals.
The bad news there are still lots if sunscreens on the shelves this year that don’t give the protection they claim, are packed with harmful chemicals and make claims that are downright misleading
Only a quarter of the more than 800 beach and sports sunscreens analyzed by Environmental Working Group for the 2013 Sunscreen Guide met their standards for effectiveness and safety –and that’s actually progress!
In 2012 the EWG could only recommend 20 percent of the sun protection productssun sleeveevaluated, and in 2011 it was even worse: just 1-in-12.
We have demanded the market offer better options, and sunscreen makers listened.  We still have a long way to go so keep up the momentum, keep demanding improved sunscreens. One-in-four is better than last year, but it’s not good enough.
According to the Wall Street Journal, Americans spend more than half a billion dollars annually on sunscreen; we really do deserve better protection & more truthful labeling.
A quarter of this year’s products still contain vitamin A ingredients that accelerate the growth of skin tumors and lesions on sun-exposed skin, according to recent government studies.
Also, 56 of the products reviewed had no active ingredients that protect against the sun’ssun sleevesdamaging UVA rays. And the industry continues to load store shelves with sunscreens that claim misleading, sky-high SPF ratings that may protect against sunburn-causing UVB rays but leave skin vulnerable to UVA.
According to the EWG the best sun protection is still sun protective clothing
The best sunscreen is a hat and a shirt. No chemicals for the skin to absorb, no questions about whether the product works, no bogus claims like “sunblock.” (No conventional product blocks out all rays. That’s why the FDA is trying to ban the term. )
But when you can’t avoid exposing your skin to the sun, use EWG’s Sunscreen Guide tosunnysleevez.comfind top-rated sunscreens with broad spectrum (UVA and UVB) protection but fewer hazardous chemicals that penetrate the skin. All of EWG’s top-rated products contain either zinc or titanium minerals to filter UVA rays.
So grab your Sunny Sleevez to protect your arms, and load up on Badger & California Baby to protect the bits clothing leaves exposed

How Much is Enough? Most people use 75% LESS than they should!

15 SPF, 30 SPF, 50 SPF…1000 SPF?
It’s doesn’t matter how high the number is if you aren’t using the amount used in lab testing you will not get the protection you expect from your sunscreen.sunnysleevez
So exactly how much sunscreen should you be using?
For the face 1 teaspoon
For the body, its 1 teaspoon each for each arm and each of the following, neck,  upper back, lower back, upper front torso, lower front torso, right upper leg and thigh, left upper leg and thigh, left lower leg and foot, right lower leg and foot

This should total up to at least one ounce(a shot glass full) per adult body per application. If you have a bottle of sunscreen that lasts all summer, you are not using enough.
When SPF is tested in the lab, it is used liberally on the skin, so if you apply just a thin layer of sunscreen, you are not getting the protection advertised on the label.
That’s a lot of sunscreen isn’t it? You can see why studies have shown that most people apply only 25% to 75% of the recommended amount. sunnysleevez.com

May-Skin Cancer Awareness Month – Self Exams lead to Early Detection

Skin cancer is the most common of all cancers, afflicting more than two million Americans each year, a number that is rising rapidly. It is also the easiest to cure, if diagnosed and treated early. When allowed to progress, however, skin cancer can result in disfigurement and even death.

No matter where you live or how dark your skin is, you are vulnerable to skin cancer if you spend any time exposed to UV rays; whether they’re from the sun or from tanning beds. Along with taking preventative measures, the best way to prevent the threat of skin cancer is early prevention.
The Skin Cancer Foundation recommends that everyone practice monthly head-to-toe self examination of  their skin, so that they can find any new or changing lesions that might be cancerous or precancerous. Skin cancers found and removed early are almost always curable. Learn about the warnings signs of skin cancer and what to look for during a self examination. If you spot anything suspicious, see a doctor.
What you’ll need: a bright light, a full-length mirror, a hand mirror, 2 chairs or stools, a blow dryer, body maps and a pencil.
1Examine your face, especially the nose, lips, mouth, and ears – front and back. Use one or both mirrors to get a clear view.man-and-face
2Thoroughly inspect your scalp, using a blow dryer and mirror to expose each section to view. Get a friend or family member to help, if you can.woman-and-blowdryer
3Check your hands carefully: palms and backs, between the fingers and under the fingernails. Continue up the wrists to examine both front and back of your forearms.woman-and-nails
4Standing in front of the full-length mirror, begin at the elbows and scan all sides of your upper arms. Don’t forget the underarmsman-and-underarm
5Next focus on the neck, chest, and torso. Women should lift breasts to view the underside.woman-front
6With your back to the full-length mirror, use the hand mirror to inspect the back of your neck, shoulders, upper back, and any part of the back of your upper arms you could not view in step 4.man-and-back-of-head
7Still using both mirrors, scan your lower back, buttocks, and backs of both legs.man-and-butt
8Sit down; prop each leg in turn on the other stool or chair. Use the hand mirror to examine the genitals. Check front and sides of both legs, thigh to shin, ankles, tops of feet, between toes and under toenails. Examine soles of feet and heels.woman-and-foot

Hey, Dashiel and company!  I recently got back from a family vacation to the Dominican Republic.  My wife, our two teenage girls, and I enjoyed relaxing on the beach in Punta Cana.  But one day we went out exploring and ended up zip-lining.  Luckily, I had brought my Sunny Sleevez along!  It was a hot day, but the sleevez not only kept me cool, but also protected me from a sunburn that many of our fellow adventurers got.  Thanks!
Love your product,
Scott Bokun

Sun Protection and Eczema Relief now available in Canada

We are so excited to announce that Sunny Sleevez are now available in Canada at online retailer The Eczema Company

Jennifer – Proud mother to 2 lovely children (1 with eczema & food allergies, 1 thankfully without) and lucky wife to a great father and husband.
Founded in 2011 by mother Jennifer Roberge after her little boy was diagnosed with eczema.
“My son’s chronic, severe eczema was very difficult emotionally for our entire family. I wanted to reach out to other families going through the same thing.
We found some really wonderful clothing to help prevent scratching and great, natural and non-toxic skincare to nourish dry eczema skin and wanted to share it with parents helping their children cope with eczema”.
Now Jennifer has added a range of ‘Classic” style Sunny Sleevez to provide instant, chemical-free sun protection for arms and top of hands.
Sun protection is extremely important for infants and children with damaged skin but even natural sunscreens can cause irritation and should not be applied to broken skin.
Now parents, grandparents and caregivers can “Slip on  Sunny Sleevez in the sun, and slide them off when they’re done!”
No mess, No missed spots. No fuss!
Sunny Sleevez will not only protect skin from the sun but also from scratching.
For extra cooling on hot days, wet your  Sunny Sleevez,  you still get the same 50+UPF protection (unlike cotton which actually gives even less protection when wet) and they feel super cool.
Light as a feather, cool as a breeze!
One stop shopping for all your itchy relief needs.
Jennifer also shares non-allergic recipes as well as recent medical info on her blog and facebook page. Having a child with a medical condition can be really isolating so it’s great to be able to come to facebook and connect with other parents of ‘itchy kids’

Walking in LA – Elyria Canyon

Elyria Canyon is located on the southwestern slopes of Mount Washington.
Elyria Canyon Park is a 35-acre nature park that provides a glimpse into the native habitat that once thrived in the hills near downtown Los Angeles.
In the 19th Century is was used for sheep and cattle-raising,  now a days it’s the well hidden treasure for locals from Cypress Park and Mount Washington to hike and picnic.
Hiking the peaceful trails it’s hard to believe it is situated only 3 Miles North of downtown !
There are about two miles of trails that meander to and through Elyria Canyon Park, which is administered by the Mountains Conservancy Foundation.
The Mt. Washington Association aided by the funds and tactical skills of the Santa Monica Mountains Conservancy saved the canyon land from a 180-unit condo.
A network of trails meanders through coastal sage scrub, chaparral, grassland and purple needle grass (once bountiful in Southern California).
The park boasts one of the finest examples of California black walnut woodland in Southern California, the height and girth of the walnut trees, along with the tree-sized stature of toyon and blue elderberry bushes; suggest the canyon has not burned in several decades.
The trails lead to views that take in Glendale, the Los Angeles River, Griffith Observatory, and the city.
As I am frankly more concerned with counting sheep that grazing them, our hikes are less about sitting and watching my flock, than herding them up hill and down, (more akin to a cattle drive), in an attempt to ensure a good nights kip, only then does mummy get some peace to sit and ponder!
The main entrance to the park is located off Wollam Street in Glassell Park.
Exit off the 2 (Glendale) Freeway at San Fernando Road (just north of Interstate 5 and State 2 interchange).
Travel east on San Fernando Road to Division Street, turn left.
Go to Wollam Street, turn right and continue
to the end of the street and park in the dirt lot.
Trailhead signs are posted.
Alternatively you can start at the top of the trail, reached from Elyria Canyon Ave, directly opposite the Self Realization Center, on San Raphael
