Shop safer and smarter with the Clean 15

PAPAYA BREAKFAST HAWAII WM LRMany of us are familiar with the EWG’s Dirty Dozen, a list of fruits and veggies that the Environmental Working Group ( EWG ) has compiled that shows high levels of pesticides.  But there is great news they have also created a list of fruits and veggies that generally has lowest incidents of pesticides called the Clean 15.  This list shows consumers that choosing these types of foods over the dirty dozen as well as choosing organically grown fruits and veggies can help families eat cleaner! Below is a list of fruits and veggies that are a good buy if you can’t afford, or don’t want to buy organic.

Dirty Dozen
  • Apples
  • Grapes
  • Peaches
  • Strawberries
  • Imported Nectarines
  • Cherry Tomatoes

Swapping the clean 15 for the dirty dozen makes shopping on a budget for the healthiest foods at lot easier more and more affordable.
I’m so happy to find my new favorite fruit, papaya is on the clean 15 but really disappointed that our year round staple, apples were on the dirty dozen.
Were you surprised by which fruit and veg made the list?

Certain Dog Breeds Do Need Sun Protection – Does Your Pooch Make The List?

Cooling Off
Cooling Off
We love our pets; we buy special foods, lots of healthy treats and of course shower them with fun toys. I take my pups everywhere I go and though I am always prepared for anything it’s easy to forget that one of my dogs is actually prone to sunburn. I’ve had to incorporate an organization system to make sure each of my dogs have what they need while we are out hitting the trails! I’ve come up with two bags that I keep next to the door, one for Mikey and one for Foxy. Mikey has his sunscreen, bottled water and certain soft treats and Foxy has her kong ball, bottled water and of course some great raw hides! This system has helped me out more then I can tell you!
I never knew that Mikey was prone to sunburn until last year; once I found out I got prepared quick! I can see how people may not actually know if their breed is prone to sunburn or not because I was once there. The best way to know is to take your dog out, bring something for shade of course but evaluate them upon returning to see if they do in fact have effects of sun overexposure. If they do there are great doggie sunscreens out there and you can even use human sunscreen as long as you rub it in and keep them from licking it off. Below I’m going to list some dog breeds that may be prone to sun burn. This should help owners be more prepared when taking their beloved pets out for a day of play!
• Boxers
• Chinese Crested
• American Staffordshire Terriers
• Greyhounds
• Dalmatians
• Greyhounds
• Whippets
• Weimaraners
• White German Sheppards
Though my dog is not actually on this list he still get’s sun burns if he is out too long. It’s a good idea to just check your pup out after a romp around the lake or a small trail run. Check their belly as well, this area is especially prone to sunburn because the sun reflects off the ground and hits the underbelly of your pet. If you find they do have a sunburn placing a cold compress over the area should help relieve any pain. If it’s raised or blistering taking your pet to the vet would be a good idea. Our pets depend on us completely so keeping them safe from sun burn is just another way we show how much we care about them!
Do you have a dog that is not on the breed list that has experienced sun burns?
We would love to hear your personal stories! Tell us about it!

Guys – Are You Guilty Of Negligence?

The Best Style Hats For Sun Protection – Men And Boys
When it comes to total protection from harmful UV rays while spending time on the lake fishing or playing outdoor sports men and boys alike should try to find a hat that will protect not only their eyes and face but their ears and back of the neck.  It’s common that men will throw on a simple baseball cap and assume that it’s enough protection but we find that sunburned necks or ears are pretty common using this type of cap.  Since there are so many hats out there, in this article we’ll be focusing on some of the best style hats that men and boys can use while spending time outside that will help them lessen sun exposure and give sufficient all over protection.
Legionnaire Hats – These types of caps have become very popular among hunters and fishermen due to the practical yet functional style.  Made up of canvass, cotton or windbreaker materials they provide comfort, flexibility and protection.  With long wide brim and an adjustable chin strap men and boys can both benefit from this hat.  Typically this hat will come with a removable back flap in case the person wearing it wants to wear it inside so there is a bit of double duty in this particular hat.  This is a great option for men and boys simply because the flap covers the entire ear and back of the neck while the long wide brim reaches out far enough to shade the face from sun.
Fisherman Hats – Fisherman hats have come a long way, if you can find one with a

large circumference brim it should provide you with sufficient sun protection.  They usually have Velcro siding to adjust coverage and the tie strap allows for a snug fit for windy days.  Well ventilated and flexible, fisherman’s hats work great for men and boys due to their maneuverability and versatility.
Baseball Hats – Though I wouldn’t typically recommend this as an option some men and most boys have a favorite baseball cap that they just don’t want to give up, if this is the case there is a way to make that beloved hat more efficient at protecting you from the sun.  Purchasing a separate neck guard that can be attached to any cap also known as a universal neck protector can turn a simple ball cap into a hat that protects the neck and ears which is most commonly sunburned while wearing regale baseball caps.
When selecting a hat for men or boys it’s important to look at the materials used, how large the brim is and if there is any additional protection for the ears and neck.  Try a few hats on and make sure you look at where the shade hits on the face and neck to ensure that you’re getting a quality hat with sufficient sun protection.

Don’t Leave Home Without This Summer Must Have!

Widebrim double layer 50upf sun hat SunnySleevez with hand protection WM
When we look at hat styles for Women and Girls for sun protection there are many typesStraw Hats, usually floppy and over sized may seem like a practical choice, there is extensive coverage around the entire face and neck but looking closely at the straw hat you’ll find that the amount of sun that seeps through is actually a lot more then you may think. Because straw hats are woven and the material being used is wider and less pliable than other materials there may be larger gaps making it easy for sun to shine through the hat.  While these are comfortable and do provide shade they are not adequate in shading you from the sun especially if you’ll be outside for an extended period of time. Women and girls alike should try to steer clear of these hats if a day at the beach or a hike in the mountains is in store. Looking at another common hat, the Bucket hat typically worn by small children are typically woven with denim, cotton or windbreaker materials.  In theory they seem like a great way to have a breathable yet functional shade from the sun but because of a smaller brim UV rays are more susceptible to hit upon the neck and the face especially from the cheeks down. Though these come in fashionable and cute themes they aren’t recommended as the brims just aren’t sufficient to block the sun rays.  Below are two of the best style hats that I have found for sun protection.
Large Brim Hats - These hats are a perfect solution for women and girls, because they are typically made up of SPF 30+ materials like canvass or extra thick cotton.  They can have an all over brim length of up to 5 ½ inches and the best part about large brim hats is that they can typically be maneuvered and shaped to your specific needs.
Large Brim Caps – These caps are similar to large brim hates but do not have a brim on the back side, typically the front flap is long enough to shield the entire face of sun exposure and will typically come with detachable flaps for extra protection on the neck and ears.  These are best used for activities like hiking or running since they are more snug and adjustable.
When it comes to finding that perfect hat for either a small girl or women it really comes down to how much shade the hat puts out and the type of materials is used.  There are now more conscious designers using UPF materials to add an additional aspect of protection.  When looking at hats for girls try to pay close attention to back of the neck, ear and cheek coverage.  Since children grow up so quickly and are usually very active it’s nice to have a hat with adjustable chin straps to ensure a snug fit.  For women try to find a few types of hats that you can mix and match for each occasion, large brim hats are stylish and offer great protection from the sun but there may be occasions where the large brim cap is more appropriate, say for a run or hiking a trial.
Are there other hats for women or girls that provide sufficient sun shade that we missed? Tell us about it!
